Former Manchester United and Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has said that David Luiz made the right choice to join Arsenal from Chelsea. The Brazil international spent the entire pre-season campaign with the Blues but he made the surprise decision to join the Gunners on the eve of the summer transfer deadline.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Mourinho said that Luiz has worked with Unai Emery at Paris Saint-Germain in the past and the manager should have a good idea of the defender’s traits. He added that the centre-back is prone to making mistakes on occasions but he may still prove a quality signing for the Gunners, considering he will want to prove himself after joining another top Premier League outfit.
He told: “ David is a player [Unai Emery, his former Paris Saint-Germain manager] knows well. He knows what David can give and what David cannot give. I think we all know the good qualities of David and where he can improve teams. And I think we all know, probably I know a little bit better because I’ve coached him, that sometimes he makes mistakes, but he makes these mistakes especially when his concentration levels are low. And when you change to a new club and you have something to prove, I think it’s a good move for him.”
Luiz did not feature during the Premier League opener for the Gunners but the club managed to seal the win with a 1-0 triumph over Newcastle United on the road. When asked about the defender’s absence, Emery highlighted that the Brazilian had spent the entire pre-season working with a different team and he needs something to adjust to the style of play at the north London side. Arsenal are scheduled to host Burnley at the Emirates Stadium in the next encounter and it remains unclear whether Luiz would make his debut from the starting XI.
